Team Jenson USA earned four top ten finishes last Sunday at the opening round of the Rim Nordic mountain bike race series in Running Springs, Calif.
The Rim Nordic ski area, which hosts the competition, sits at an elevation of nearly 7,000 feet. Racers benefit from the cooler temperatures up there this time of year, but pay for it with the lung burn that comes from hammering in the relatively thin air of the upper reaches of the SoCal mountains.
The 8-mile course was typically tough, due to both the loose dirt and rocks and the long, painful climb out of the start. The backside of the loop, however, rewarded racers with some of the most enjoyable, shady and twisty singletrack of any course in the state.
Daniel Perez and Tim Pickett, both racing in the Expert 30-34 class, battled wheel to wheel for most of their first two laps.
Daniel charged ahead on the third and final loop to secure a 2nd place finish. Tim, only a few minutes behind, powered across the finish line in 7th place.
Rod Leveque finished 2nd in the Sport 30-34 class. Rod’s two-lap time of about 90 minutes was among the fastest sport times of the day.
Dean Long stopped in the pits at the end of his first lap to repair a mechanical problem, but finished strong to earn 9th place in a typically large field in the Sport 35-39 group.
