Fall mountain bike racing in Southern California is big fun. By the time October and November roll around, the ultra-competitive events are done for the year, the series championships have been awarded and the serious racers who have battled all season are ready to unwind and play.

So it was no surprise that the atmosphere was relaxed and jovial on Oct. 7 at the SC Velo Cross Country Challenge at Bonelli Park in San Dimas. It was a perfect day for a race, with crystal clear skies and mild temperatures.

Experts rode four laps of the 5+ mile course, sport racers rode three and beginners rode two. The course was mostly mellow, rolling fire roads, although it had a couple stretches of fast singletrack. One loose, tricky, off-camber section at the end launched a few unfortunate riders into a cactus patch. Ouch!

Five riders from the Jenson USA racing team turned out, not including a special appearance by Wayne Sharp, who took a day off from managing Jenson's Ontario retail store to compete.

Timothy Pickett, Daniel Perez and Rod Leveque raced the Expert Men 30-39 group. Rod earned a medal for his 5th place finish and Daniel finished close behind in 6th. Tim worked hard to earn a ninth place finish after his rear derailleur cable snapped on the second lap.

Mark Mumea medaled with his 4th place finish in the Sport Men 30-39 class, and Dean Long came in two places behind in 6th.

Wayne finished 7th in the Beginner Men 30-39 class after attacking the course on his 6-inch travel, full suspension Rocky Mountain Slayer. Overkill? Maybe, but Wayne was grinning from ear to ear the entire time.

Look for Team Jenson USA next at the Mt. SAC Fall Fat Tire Classic in Walnut on Nov. 4. If you've been curious about racing, this is a great one to come out and try. We hope to see you there!
